When someone is crying or you are trying to console someone who just started crying, the first thing you should always do is get them a tissue if they don't already have one.

This may seem like a very simple life pro tip but as a teacher, whom has had to deal with many a crying child and parents, I have found if you take a therapeutic action as the first course (followed by a short time letting them collect themselves) the person almost immediately becomes more receptive to you.

I've also noticed that when people do receive a tissue they tend to release their breathe and it helps them collect themselves. I'm no expert in psychology by any means but man, this small act is something I have seen so many people miss out on, in fact, I often see most people just letting others cry without providing any tissues/napkins at all. So ya, if you see someone crying and are planning to help/console in any way, first thing you should always do is get them a tissue
