You can make your own electrolyte drinks at home with just water, salt, sugar, and lemon or lime juice

If a family member is sick with a fever, they need to make sure they’re at least keeping up with their salt intake, especially if they have a low appetite. You can make this at home.

Here are proportions. It can be adjusted for taste.

  • 1.5 - 2 cups water (regular pint glass)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • juice from half a lemon. Or a few squirts of lemon juice concentrate.
  • 2 tsp honey/sugar/stevia (if you need calories, best to go with real sugar instead of zero calorie sweetener)

You also can simply add some salt to regular fruit juice if you have it.

Salt is very important for hydrating someone with a fever. (And hydrating in general). Good rule of thumb is to have one electrolyte drink for every 3-4 glasses of water. If someone simply cannot keep food down, then they should consume even more electrolyte drink. Water alone will not be as effective in hydrating. They need some salts and calories alongside the water.
